How to keep mosquitoes out of the kitchen while keeping the door open
Everdailyindia
Open kitchens in Indian homes are not a design choice. They are how you cook. Tadka smoke, steamer steam, and monsoon humidity all need a way out. Closing the kitchen door for two hours is how you get a stuffy room and oil on every surface.
The problem starts after 5:30 pm. That is when Culex and Aedes move toward light and food smell. If the kitchen opens onto a courtyard, grill, or back lane, they walk straight in. Coils and plugs help a little. They do not replace a physical barrier on the door you actually use.
Why a closed kitchen is a bad fix
A closed door traps heat around the gas. It also traps the smell of fish or onions in the rest of the house when you finally open it. Families in Pune chawls, Nagpur bungalows, and Sambhajinagar row houses all do the same thing: they leave the kitchen door ajar and then complain about bites at dinner.
You need the opening. You do not need a hole in the mesh.
What actually works on a kitchen door
- A walk-through magnetic mosquito net on the kitchen door frame. You walk in with a plate; the magnets snap shut behind you.
- Fit the mesh on the frame, not on the shutter. The door can stay open against the wall.
- Keep the mesh long enough that it brushes the floor. A 4 cm gap at the bottom is a mosquito highway.
- If there is an iron grill outside the kitchen, fit the net on the inner wooden or aluminium frame. Do not try to tape mesh onto moving grill bars.
A framed sliding mosquito shutter is fine for a window. It is clumsy on a kitchen door you pass twenty times while cooking. Velcro-plus-magnet mesh is the kitchen tool.
Fit it so cooking still works
Wipe the frame. Oil film from years of frying is why tape fails in week two. Degrease with dish soap, dry fully, then stick the Velcro.
Measure the clear opening — the hole you walk through — in centimetres, not the outer decorative frame. Typical kitchen doors here are 70–90 cm wide and 180–210 cm high. If your opening is larger, pick the next size up and trim after the magnets sit centred.
Leave the door open against a stopper. You should be able to walk through with both hands full. If you have to hold the mesh apart, the magnets are too strong for kids or the overlap is wrong. WhatsApp a frame photo to us before you pay if the kitchen has a half-door or a jali.

Evening habits that still matter
A net is not magic if the window is a second open hole. Close or mesh the kitchen window at dusk. Do not leave wet waste uncovered near the door. Turn the exhaust on while you fry; the net still lets air move, it just stops the insect.
If someone props the mesh open with a bucket “for five minutes”, that five minutes is when the room fills. Magnets exist so you do not have to remember.
What this is not
This is not a spray schedule and it is not a coil brand. It is a door product for people who cook with the door open. If you also need to send a packet to Pune or Nagpur, that is a separate Maharashtra courier desk on this site — not a shop SKU.
Measure once. Stick once. Cook with the door open.
